Who Is Cristiano Ronaldo?

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro is a soccer superstar from Portugal. Manchester United spent £12 million (nearly $14 million US dollars) to sign him in 2003, when he was just 16 years old, a record cost for a player of his age.

Ronaldo scored Manchester United's first three goals in the 2004 FA Cup final, ensuring the club's victory. In 2008, he established a franchise record for goals scored, and the following year, Real Madrid paid a record $131 million for his services.

Among his numerous achievements, he holds a record-tying five Ballon d'Or player of the year honours and led Portugal to an emotional European Championship triumph in 2016. Ronaldo began a new journey in July 2018. Ronaldo embarked on a new phase of his career by signing with Italian Serie A club Juventus.

Early Life

Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro was born in Funchal, the Portuguese island of Madeira's capital, in the parish of So Pedro and grew up in the parish of Santo António nearby. He is the fourth and youngest child of chef Maria Dolores dos Santos Viveiros da Aveiro and municipal gardener and part-time kit man José Dinis Aveiro. Isabel da Piedade, his father's great-grandmother, came from the Cape Verdean island of So Vicente. Hugo is his older brother, while Elma and Liliana Cátia "Katia" are his older sisters. Due to poverty, his father's drinking, and having too many children already, his mother stated that she intended to abort him,  Her doctor, on the other hand, declined to do the operation. Ronaldo was up in a poor Catholic family, sharing a room with all of his siblings.

Ronaldo spent two years with Nacional after playing for Andorinha from 1992 to 1995, when his father was the kit man. He went on a three-day trial with Sporting CP in 1997 when he was 12 years old, and the club bought him for £1,500.  Following that, he relocated from Madeira to Alcochete, Portugal, to join Sporting's development academy.  Ronaldo thought he had the potential to play semi-professionally at the age of 14, and he and his mother opted to forego his education in order to focus only on football.  He had been expelled after throwing a chair at his instructor, whom he said had "disrespected" him, despite being popular with other pupils. However, he was diagnosed with a beating heart a year later, a condition that may have caused him to retire from sports. Ronaldo had heart surgery in which a laser was used to fuse several cardiac channels into one, causing his resting heart rate to change. He was released from the hospital hours later and returned to training a few days later.

Soccer Career

Manchester United:

Manchester United paid more than £12 million to get Ronaldo when he was just 16 years old in 2001, a record sum for a player of his age.

With his delicate movement and deft technique, Ronaldo had wowed even his opponents with a dazzling performance with Portugal against Manchester. He made such an impact that other United players requested that their management try to recruit the young talent, which the squad did quickly.

Ronaldo did not let the soccer world down: in the 2004 FA Cup final, he proved his potential by scoring the team's first three goals and assisting them in winning the trophy. Ronaldo signed a five-year, £31 million contract with Real Madrid in 2007.

Ronaldo justified his hefty contract a year later when he had one of the best seasons in club history, breaking a franchise record for goals scored , and winning the FIFA World Player of the Year award for 2008. Ronaldo was a key figure in Manchester United's three Premier League titles.

Real Madrid:

Real Madrid agreed to pay a record $131 million to Manchester United in 2009 for the opportunity to sign Ronaldo. Ronaldo's devotion to Manchester United had been questioned for some time, and rumours persisted that he wanted to play elsewhere, so his departure came as no surprise.

"I know they'll expect a lot of me to be successful at the club, and I know I'll be under a lot more pressure than I was at Manchester United since I spent so many years there," Ronaldo told reporters. "However, it represents a fresh challenge that will help me become the greatest footballer I can be." Ronaldo went on to win an incredible number of individual and team awards. He earned his fourth Ballon d'Or award as the sport's player of the year in December 2016, defeating Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona.

In 2016, Ronaldo won the European Championship, Champions League, and Club World Cup, as well as individual UEFA and France Football magazine honours. The next year, he won his fifth Ballon d'Or, tying Messi for the most in a single season.

Juventus:

After teasing that his time with Real was coming to an end, Ronaldo confirmed the speculations in July 2018 by signing for Juventus, an Italian Serie A team that paid Real a $140 million transfer price.

Ronaldo wrote an open message to Real supporters on the club's website, writing: "These years at Real Madrid and in Madrid have undoubtedly been the best years of my life. I have nothing but gratitude for this team, its supporters, and the city. I can only express my gratitude to them all for the love and care they have shown me."

Ronaldo's first season with Juventus was a success by most accounts. He scored 10 goals in his first 14 appearances, including the lone goal in a Supercoppa Italiana victory over AC Milan. In May 2019, he was awarded the league's MVP after guiding his team to its seventh straight Serie A victory.

Return to Manchester United:

On August 27, 2021, it was announced that Ronaldo would return to Manchester United.

Portugal National Team:-

Ronaldo added an emotional triumph to his collection on July 10, 2016. Ronaldo led Portugal to the European Championship final against France as captain of his national team.

Despite the fact that he was forced to leave the game after suffering a knee injury 25 minutes in, Portugal went on to win the championship 1-0, their first international prize. Ronaldo's teammates stated that as team captain, he inspired them from the sidelines.

"“This is one of the most exciting times of my career,” Ronaldo said. ”I've always dreamed of winning a trophy with the national team and making history. And I was successful. Thank God, everything went smoothly for us."

Ronaldo had a fantastic start to the 2018 World Cup, scoring three goals in a 2-2 draw with Spain, then adding another against Morocco to create a European record with his 85th international goal.

In the knockout stage, he was held scoreless in a 2-1 loss to Uruguay, following which he refused to speculate on his future with the national team.

After Portugal's triumph, fullback Cedric Soares stated, "He gave us a lot of confidence and he said, 'Listen folks, I'm confident we'll win this Euro, so stick together and fight for it."

Statue at the Madeira Airport:

In March 2017, self-taught sculptor Emanuel Santos unveiled a bronze bust of Ronaldo at the airport in Ronaldo’s hometown of Madeira, Portugal. The statue was ridiculed for its sinister smile and apparent lack of likeness to its subject, though Santos didn't seem to understand the uproar.

Personal Life:

Ronaldo is the father of four children. Cristiano Jr., his first child, was born on June 17, 2010 in the United States. He added that he has full custody of the child and that he will not publicly divulge the mother's identify as per their agreement.  Ronaldo confirmed the end of his five-year romance with Russian model Irina Shayk in January 2015.

Legal issue

Ronaldo was sentenced to a two-year suspended prison term and fined €18.8 million in June 2018, however the amount was later lowered to €16.8 million after a settlement with Spanish authorities. So long as he does not re-offend, the punishment can be completed on probation with no jail time.

Following a rape accusation made by two women in 2005, the British Crown Prosecution Service investigated Ronaldo and another man. The two women retracted their allegations within days, and Scotland Yard then released a statement claiming that there was insufficient evidence for a prosecution.

Ronaldo was being investigated by the Las Vegas Police Department in April 2017 for an allegation by a lady that he had raped her in 2009. Ronaldo paid a lady US$375,000 in a non-disclosure deal, according to documents certified by Ronaldo's attorneys. Ronaldo and his attorneys released a long statement rejecting all allegations, characterising them as a "intentional defamation campaign" with sections that were "substantially changed and/or entirely invented," a charge that Der Spiegel flatly refuted.
