History

Gulshan Kumar, a fruit juice vendor in Delhi's Daryaganj neighbourhood at the time, launched T-Series on July 11, 1983. Prior to publishing original music, the firm offered pirated Bollywood tunes. The Indian audio cassette industry was tiny at the time, with rampant piracy, but demand for cassette music was rising. While Kumar "was involved in piracy, he was fiercely market- and consumer-driven," according to Rediff. T-Series also took advantage of copyright gaps that allowed for the sale of cover versions of songs, which it subsequently flooded the market with. Lawrence Liang and Ravi Sundaram, two researchers, wrote:.

T-Series was a hugely disruptive force in the Indian music industry, thanks in large part to its success as a pirate. [T-Series] engaged in more straightforward copyright infringement in the form of pirate releases of popular hits, and it frequently illegally obtained film scores before the release of the film to ensure that its recordings were the first to hit the market... [T-Series] engaged in more straightforward copyright infringement in the form of pirate releases of popular hits, and it often illegally obtained film scores before the release of the film to ensure that its recordings were the first to hit the market.  Kumar found that religious music had a market, and he began recording and distributing it. Because many elderly Hindu devotees couldn't read hymns and chants due to declining vision, Kumar recruited singers to record the chants and sell them as inexpensive cassettes. Later, he shot and distributed VHS and video cassette cassettes of significant Hindu pilgrimages in India.

Ravindra Jain composed the music for T-Series' first original film soundtrack, Lallu Ram, which was released in 1984. The soundtrack for the 1988 Bollywood blockbuster Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (commonly known as QSQT), directed by Mansoor Khan and starring Aamir Khan and Juhi Chawla, was the company's breakthrough. The song of this "Papa Kehte Hain," performed by Udit Narayan and starring Aamir Khan, was the album's biggest success.

With the release of Mahesh Bhatt's Aashiqui (1990), T-Series established themselves as a major music company. The soundtrack album for the film Aashiqui, created by the team Nadeem–Shravan, has sold 20 million copies in India, making it the best-selling Bollywood soundtrack album of all time. [11] Yo Yo Honey Singh sang a cover version of "Dheere Dheere" from Aashiqui, which was released by T-Series in 2015.

T-Series' yearly earnings increased from 20 crore ($16 million) in 1985 to 200 crore ($88 million) in 1991,and 500 crore ($140 million) in 1997.  The Mumbai crime group D-Company assassinated T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar in 1997. Because Nadeem Akhtar Saifi was originally accused of participation in the murder but eventually being exonerated, T-Series lost one of its most productive musicians at the time, Nadeem–Shravan. Gulshan Kumar died in 1997, and his son Bhushan Kumar has headed the firm since since, with the aid of Gulshan's younger brother Krishan Kumar. The highly acclaimed blockbuster Hindi Medium (2017) is the highest-earning T-Series film to date, grossing 322.4 crore ($46 million) globally, with $34 million in China alone. T-Series' Saaho, a sci-fi thriller with a production budget of 300 crore (US$42 million) and released in 2019, was one of the most costly Indian films.

Good relations

Another factor for T-Series' enormous popularity is Gulshan Kumar's proclivity for keeping excellent relationships with merchants. T-Series will purchase back any unsold cassettes from the shops back then. Because of all of the aforementioned factors, its distribution networks developed very strong, allowing it to reach new markets. The copyright rules of the time allowed for the re-recording of a movie's cover versions of the songs three years after its premiere. A cover version of a song is merely a remake or fresh recording of a previously recorded and released song by someone other than the original artist.

A good observer-

Gulshan Kumar was a devout Hindu who worshipped Lord Shiva and the goddess Parvati.  He was a keen observer, noting that Hinduism was the predominant religion in India, and that many people liked reading religious songs and chanting. However, because to their failing eyesight, the elderly Hindu devotees were unable to read hymns and chants.

Adopt responsibility

Recalling these remarks inspired Bhushan Kumar to take over T-Series and carry on his father's legacy, and he now sees his father in T-Series' music. Bhushan Kumar realised the value of connections in business when his father died. Almost every company is built on connections, and Gulshan Kumar had excellent ties with everyone, including music directors, film directors, producers, government agencies, and so on, but those relationships were lost when he died. As a result, Bhushan Kumar, who was 19 years old at the time, was forced to reestablish those relationships and trust with the people, but many people questioned his abilities because he was young.

The correct way

He could have easily given up and outsourced the music production to other businesses because T-Series was already a very huge brand, but he fought hard to keep the T-Series brand image. He is now the Chairman and Managing Director of T-Series, and he was instrumental in expanding the company's offerings to include electronics, CDs, and other products. He produced a number of successful films, including Tum Bin, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Patiala House, Ready and Lucky: No Time for Love, and others.

With the passage of time, Bhushan Kumar elevated T-Series to new heights by staying current with industry trends. Bhushan Kumar, like his father, pays close attention to the music played at gatherings, which aids in the development of his musical sensibility. For the same aim, he has also employed a group of professionals he refers to as the music team. Bhushan Kumar takes the feedback he receives from the team and applies it to his musical abilities. Both the father and the son share many characteristics, such as their strong religious beliefs and their willingness to take on new tasks and dangers. Even now, Bhushan Kumar is devoted to his father, releasing nearly everything in T-Series with the phrase "Gulshan Kumar presents."

YouTube Journey

T-Series created their first YouTube account on March 13, 2006.  It did not upload any videos to YouTube till the year 2010.

T-Series now has hundreds of videos on YouTube, and its content strength in several languages has helped them gain over 180 million followers and become a YouTube success storey.  Jio ushered in the Indian internet revolution by making internet access available to the public at extremely low costs, and this contributed significantly to the exponential development of the T-Series YouTube channel.

T-Series made a staggering US$100 million on YouTube between January and July 2018.

Net-worth

T-Series makes the majority of its money from music releases, but it also makes money through YouTube channels, content partnerships with online music streaming services, royalties from radio and television stations, and money from the artists' live concerts.

Bhushan Kumar is now a highly wealthy businessman who has not only released his father's ambitions but has also contributed significantly to the internationalist of Indian music.

T-Series has set its sights on being India's largest film production business after achieving its goal of becoming the country's top music record label.

T-Series said in 2018 that it will invest a staggering 500 crore Indian rupees in film development.  As a producer, and owner of T-Series, the estimated Net-worth of Bhushan Kumar is said to be $ 47 Million i.e 350 Crore INR.
